New Plymouth Building Celebrated

PLYMOUTH – The Baker-Polito Administration Thursday celebrated the groundbreaking for the new administration building at Plymouth Municipal Airport, which has received $4.8 million in state funding. The new 5,500 square foot administration building will contain space for offices, conference rooms available for use by the local community, businesses, and a restaurant.

“We are pleased to work closely with our local partners to invest in Plymouth Municipal Airport, supporting economic growth and development on the South Shore,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “Building a stronger transportation system includes investing in municipal and regional airports which help ensure that people in communities throughout the Commonwealth have convenient travel options.”

“Our administration is proud to provide support for Plymouth Municipal Airport, which will provide enhanced space for both community members and travelers,” said Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito.

The new administration building will be approximately one-third larger than the existing building and is expected to be completed in spring 2019 – well ahead of the Town of Plymouth’s 400th anniversary in 2020. The building will be constructed in what is currently the traffic circle in front of the existing administration building. The existing building will then be demolished and converted into space for public use and outdoor restaurant seating.

According to MassDOT’s Statewide Airport Economic Impact Study, Plymouth Municipal Airport in 2015 supported 319 jobs with a payroll of nearly $13.7 million and generated over $47.8 million in economic output. The airport experiences approximately 60,000 aircraft take-offs and landings each year.

“This new building will offer many new features including more space for office and administrative personnel, as well as room for a restaurant and businesses, and conference rooms that can be used by members of the public,” said Transportation Secretary and CEO Stephanie Pollack. “We are pleased to see that construction is beginning and look forward to seeing the finished structure that will benefit the Plymouth Municipal Airport for many years to come.”

“This investment allows the facility to continue serving people throughout the region and providing options for travelers,” said MassDOT Aeronautics Administrator Jeffrey DeCarlo. “Under the leadership of Governor Baker, Lieutenant Governor Polito and Secretary Pollack, the Aeronautics Division is investing in State of Good Repair projects so existing assets are maintained and enhanced. We thank the many people who have been involved in this project and have helped get us to where we are today.”

“I appreciate the Baker-Polito Administration’s interest in investing in transportation options for our region,” said State Senator Vinny deMacedo. “The improvements to Plymouth’s airport will create a state of the art transit hub to spur economic development opportunities, attract economic investment in our region, and provide a wonderful welcome for the influx of visitors for the celebration of Plymouth’s 400th anniversary.”

“I would like to thank the Baker-Polito Administration and the Town of Plymouth for their support of this project,” said State Representative Mathew Muratore. “The new building, restaurant, and business offices will better serve the public and the influx of new travelers expected for Plymouth’s 400th Commemoration and long after 2020.”

Massachusetts’ system of 39 public-use airports supports more than 162,000 jobs with over $6.1 billion in total annual payroll, and generates $16.6 billion in total economic activity. The MassDOT Aeronautics Division advances the operation and development of these airports through grant funding, airport inspections, technical guidance, statewide planning initiatives, aviation education outreach and communication with local, state and federal officials.
