PLYMOUTH, MA—In preparation for Wednesday evening's snowstorm, the Plymouth Fire Department is asking residents to assist firefighters by clearing snow away from fire hydrants during and after the storm.

In the event of a fire, the department said that visible and accessible fire hydrants can save homes and lives. Firefighters can lose valuable time if they are preoccupied with finding a fire hydrant that is buried in snow. By clearing snow from hydrants near their homes, residents protect themselves and others.

“We would like to urge all residents to help us clear away the snow from the fire hydrants near their homes and businesses to ensure our firefighters can easily access them should the need arise,” Fire Chief G. Edward Bradley said in a statement. “This quick bit of prevention could prove to be life-saving in the event of a fire during the course of this coming storm, or any future storm.”

The Plymouth Fire Department has shared the following tips with residents:

  • Know the location of all fire hydrants in your neighborhood.
  • Make sure they are shoveled clear after each snowfall.
  • Clear away any snow and ice in the area surrounding fire hydrants.
  • Clear the snow three feet all around the hydrant so firefighters have enough room to connect a hose.
  • Residents are also urged to look out for elderly or handicap neighbors by taking a few extra minutes to shovel out their hydrants as well if needed.
