Plymouth Nuclear Plant Reopens

Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth was closed last week due to a valve problem. The plant will shut down in 2019.

PLYMOUTH, MA — Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth was reopened Thursday after an outage last week. The station was shut down Friday, April 27, after an issue with "feedwater regulator valves," according to station spokesman Patrick O’Brien. Pneumatic controllers for two valves were replaced and the plant was cleared to reopen

Pilgrim is set to shut down May 31, 2019. Louisiana-based Entergy operates the plant and said it made the closure decision "because of poor market conditions, reduced revenues, and increased operational costs."

Pilgrim went online in 1972 and generates 680 megawatts, enough to power over 600,000 homes. Federal authorities in recent years stepped up oversight of the plant following numerous safety violations related to fire suppression protocol and an unplanned shutdowns during snowstorms, among other problems.
