Quincy Woman Dies In Crash That Snarled Route 3

Route 3 was closed for hours Sunday after the crash in Pembroke, which left four others injured.

PEMBROKE, MA — An elderly woman died and several others were injured in crashes that shut down Route 3 in Pembroke on Sunday, according to police.

Near 9:30 a.m., an 87-year-old woman from Quincy crashed in the northbound lanes near exit 12. She sustained serious injuries in the crash and died at a nearby hospital, according to state police.

The initial crash triggered several smaller crashes, and four people ended up going to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. Route 3 northbound was closed for about three hours, causing a miles-long backup. All lanes had reopened by around 1 p.m., according to MassDOT.

Police did not immediately say caused the initial crash. A pothole had been repaired earlier on Sunday just north of the scene of the crash, but was not a factor in any of the incidents, state police said.
