Mad Science at the Independence Mall

Mad Science comes to the Independence Mall with a free interactive presentation. Mad Science of Southern Massachusetts will be holding a free interactive science presentation at Independence Mall at 1 p.m. in Center Court. The presentation titled “Marvels in Motion” is an interactive event all about motion, inertia, and gravity. There are all sorts of surprises such as: clearing a table without touching the dishes, watching various objects “defy” gravity, find out what it really means to be “under pressure” and so much more! Lots of brave and “well-balanced” helpers from the audience will be needed!  After the presentation children will be invited to the activity station where they learn about polymers and make their own putty to take home.

Something's Fishy at Plimoth Plantaiton

“Fishy” is the theme for this year’s April vacation programming at Plimoth Plantation. Explore some sea-related crafts, activities, workshops and talks throughout the day April 15-19.

In the 17th century, fish were important as both food and fertilizer. The Wampanoag people depended on the sea for much of their diet and spent the spring and summer near the coast to take advantage of its bounty. It was Tisquantum, a Wampanoag man, who taught the Pilgrims to use herring as fertilizer for their corn. We often think of the Pilgrims as farmers, but they were fishermen, too.

Activities will include: make a fish reel (materials fee); Wampanoag net making; Colonial net making; corn planting demonstrations on the education sites; meet a salted cod; cornhusk dolls (materials fee); Native spring planting (materials fee); and ship to shore waterfront tours.

See www.plimoth.org for more information, including program locations and times, or call 508-746-1622.
