Roslindale Postal Worker Indicted For Undelivered Mail

A former Roslindale Post Office worker was charged after stacks of undelivered mail were found in the back of an SUV.

ROSLINDALE, MA – A former Roslindale Post Office worker was arrested Tuesday and charged in federal court in connection with the stacks of undelivered mail she allegedly had in the back of her SUV.

Megan Hawes, 28, of Roslindale, was indicted on theft of "mail matter" by a Postal Service employee.

The charge provides for a sentence of no greater than five years in prison, up to three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine. Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Hawes was arrested after a tow company said they found stacks of undelivered mail found in the back of an SUV in a Weymouth impound lot last month. The car, which was registered to Hawes' boyfriend, was towed March 30 after it was flagged for being uninsured and having an expired registration, according to the Patriot Ledger.

After it sat in the lot for about a month the owner of the tow company said last month he went searching for information about the owner and looked in the back of the SUV and discovered bundles of unopened mail, and some that were opened, US Postal Service crates and several Amazon packages that had been ripped open, according to WCVB.

The owner of the tow company told the Ledger he found "thousands" of pieces of undelivered mail in the SUV.

The Department of Justice said they found mail dating back between March 10, 2017 to May 10 of this year, while Hawes still worked for the US Postal Service.

Hawes appeared in federal court in Boston Tuesday afternoon and was released on conditions, the US Attorney's Office said.
