5. This weekend marks the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking. Shrewsbury was honored to have the last living, American survivor Lillian Gertrud Asplund, who was 5 when the Titanic set sail, according to the New York Times. She was 99 when she died in 2006. She was born in Worcester and moved back to Shrewsbury in 1951 with her family. She held secretarial jobs in the Worcester area. Her father and three of her four brothers, including her fraternal twin brother, died in the sinking.
