3. More than 200 years ago, congress declared Feb. 22 (George Washington's birthday) a federal holiday. Since then, the United States has chosen to honor not only President Washington, but also President Abraham Lincoln, who was born on Feb. 12 and all presidents who have served the United States. It has also become known to be a good time to buy a car because of many local President's Day sales.

4. Shrewsbury High School varsity hockey takes on St. John's on the ice today at Holy Cross, 1 College St., Worcester. Come cheer on your favorite high schools.

5. On this day in 1985, Ireland defies the Catholic Church and approves legislation that allows birth control pills to be sold over the counter. The Catholic Church was recently in the news for its opposition to President Obama's new federal birth control law.
