2. On this day in 1963, the hula hoop was invented by Wham-O co-founder Arthur "Spud" Melin, according to history.com. He was inspired by Australian children using wooden hoops in gym class and created the plastic version that can still be found in schools and backyards across the world. And what is the hula hoop named after? The hula dance, of course, which is a hip-shaking Hawaiin dance that looks quite similar if you've ever tried to swing a hula hoop around your waist. Not only is hula hooping fun, but it can be great exercise for children of all ages.
