A Community Mourns the Loss of Student

John "Jack" Street, a student at Nipmuc Regional High School died after an accident at Ski Ward last night.

Nipmuc Regional High School Principal John Clements offered counseling services to those in the school community and offered the family condolences in his blog posted on the website earlier today.

"This is a horrible tragedy that impacts all of us at Nipmuc," Clements wrote in his blog. "Jack will be remembered as a bright and talented young man with a great sense of humor and a tremendous personality. His loss will be felt deeply by us not only today, but also in the weeks, months and years to come."

On Tuesday night at about 6:30 p.m., Jack Street was skiing with the Nipmuc Regional High School Ski Team when he had a possible seizure and fell 30 feet from the chair lift at in Shrewsbury. He was administered CPR at the scene and later died at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, according to the Worcester District Attorney's Office.

"As a school community we need to be able to rely on each other at this time of sadness. Please know that all of the guidance counselors in the district are available at Nipmuc throughout the day as a resource for students, staff, and faculty," Clements continued. "In addition, we have been in contact with the Riverside Trauma Center who will provide additional help as needed for the members of our community."

Clements also offered counseling services to anyone who was affected by Jack's death. "We realize that this loss will affect our entire communities of Mendon and Upton," he wrote. "As a school, we are available to work with you to provide as much support as possible."

He also extended his sympathy to Jack's family and friends during their time of mourning.

The owners of Ski Ward also posted the following statement on their website earlier today.

"On the evening of Jan. 4, a member of the Nipmuc High School Race Team apparently suffered a medical emergency and then fell from the chairlift. It saddens us to have learned that the racer has passed away. As a family operated ski area, this tragedy is close to our hearts. Please join the Ski Ward family in giving our heartfelt thoughts,  prayers and support to his family and friends during this difficult time," the statement said.
