Fire Destroys Shrewsbury Home

The house will most likely be torn down after last night's fire on Edgemere Boulevard.

This was not the first fire at 5 Edgemere Blvd., according to Shrewsbury Fire Chief James Vuona.

"There was a fire at this location about four years ago," Vuona said. "But I was out of town when it occurred, so I don't have any information on that one."

On Sunday at about 9:45 p.m., the and responded to , along with departments from Worcester, Northborough and Westborough.

"It appears it started in the rear of the house near the back porch area," Vuona said. "The rear half of the house and roof were fully engulfed in flames when the first Shrewsbury Fire Department crews arrived. We also had to work to protect two houses in close proximity to fire by wetting down the roofs and exterior."

Vuona said the home owner, Deborah Trotto, was in bed and was awoken by smoke detectors. She was the only one in the house.

"The fire was a complete loss," he said. "Damage was in excess of $200,000."

The Shrewsbury K-9 unit was used to check for accelerants, but did not find any traces of any, according to Vuona.

"The state fire marshal will release a final report on the fire," Vuona said.

He also said no suspicious activity was found in the previous fire on Feb. 2, 2008. The two-bedroom home was built in 1916 and has a view of Lake Quinsigamond.
