Mother and Daughter to Support Breast Cancer Prevention in Statewide Event on 6/17

Breast Cancer Prevention event

Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC) will be holding its annual, statewide Against the Tide Swim, Kayak, Walk, Run and/or Aquathon events again in 2017. Proceeds benefit MBCC, which is the state’s leading breast cancer organization that seeks to understand the causes of breast cancer to find ways to prevent the disease.

Breast cancer is a disease that often effects an entire family rather than just an individual. That is why supporting prevention is often a multi-generational effort. Resolution Bodyworks will again serve as a community beach sponsor in Hopkinton for the participants of the Against the Tide event for MBCC; providing chair massage and athletic training coverage for the Run, Walk, Swim, Kayak participants. Mieka Davis, owner and Therapist for Resolution Bodyworks is a 25-year licensed Massage Therapist and 25-year seasoned Athletic Trainer specializing in Holistic Sports medicine. Davis says, “Our team of therapists is proud to serve the Against the Tide participants and happy to support the cause of exposing toxins in the environment to prevent cancers.”

“We are very fortunate to have such tremendous support from Mieka, and her team at Resolution Bodyworks, demanding greater protection of their children’s future health and supporting our effort to stop breast cancer before it starts,” says MBCC Executive Director Cheryl Osimo. “We look forward to partnering with her again on the beach in Hopkinton on June 17th.”

Following her mother’s example, Elliana Davis, Teen Silver Queen Miss New England, will volunteer at the event supporting the participants on the beach. Elliana is currently a senior at Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School in Marlboro MA, planning to attend Framingham State University in the fall. Her platform projects center around building confidence and courage in young women. “It always warms my heart to see young people like Elliana Davis support MBCC’s focus on prevention. It is for them and with them that we strive to succeed in our goal toward breast cancer prevention for future generations,” says Osimo. “We appreciate her passion towards prevention and generosity of time in volunteering.”

The 25th commemorative Against the Tide event will feature Sera Congi, WCVB reporter, as a celebrity emcee and world renowned Coro Allegro, Boston’s acclaimed classical chorus for members, friends and allies of the LGBT community singing the National Anthem.

The Statewide Metro-Boston Against the Tide will be held for the 25th commemorative year at DCR's Hopkinton State Park (30 miles from Boston, 20 miles from Worcester) on Saturday, June 17, 2017. The statewide Cape Cod Against the Tide will be held for the 18th year at DCR's Nickerson State Park (Brewster, MA) on Saturday, August 19, 2017.

These family-friendly and inspirational events bring people from all demographics together with one goal in mind: breast cancer prevention. Both events consist of several components: competitive and recreational swims, recreational kayak, a fitness walk, and USA Track & Field certified 5K/10K runs. Participants of all ages and abilities can choose 1, 2, or 3 of these exciting activities. The event also offers an Aquathon “Splash and Dash” component, where participants “splash” in the competitive 1-mile swim and immediately “dash” in the 5K or 10K run (chosen by the participant).

MBCC is inviting people throughout Massachusetts to register for one or both of the events at www.mbcc.org/swim or by calling 1-800-649-MBCC (6222). Those who cannot attend are invited to make a pledge to a registered participant or existing team. Participants may register as an individual or as part of a team. Registration is $40 per adult per event activity ($80 for Aquathon) and $25 per student per event activity ($50 for Aquathon) up to a maximum of 3 events. We encourage all participants to fundraise beyond the registration minimum, as all proceeds support Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition. Prizes will be awarded to the podium finishers and top fundraisers.
