School Committee Budget Gap Down to $280,000

More cuts and funding resources were discussed by the School Committee.

With just under a week to go before Monday's annual town meeting, narrowed the budget gap by $440,000.

At their meeting last night, the School Committee voted a $50 million budget, reflecting an increase of $2.8 million or 6 percent, according to the DailyShrewsbury.com.

The School Committee were able to reduce the school department's 2013 budget thanks to the state Senate Ways and Means Committee, which released their budget proposal earlier this week.

The Finance Committee will meet tonight to discuss the budget with school officials and the selectmen before Monday's town meeting.

While the gap has been greatly reduced, Superintendent Joseph Sawyer said at the meeting last night, it is "obviously still a substantial sum."

"My hope is, based on evolving revenues and whatnot, is that the town will have the ability to try to close this gap if at all possible," he said, according to the Daily Shrewsbury.
