Shrewsbury Athletes Receive Awards

The athletes have to maintain minimum grades to participate in the program.

The following press release was submitted by the Shrewsbury American Youth Football & Cheer Organization (SAYFCO):

SAYFCO held its annual banquet at to mark the end of the 2011 season. Over 550 people attended the festivities on Sunday, Jan. 15.

During the event, Mary Hastings, SAYFCO’s director of academics, presented scholar athlete awards to ten participants currently in grades 6 and above who achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or 95 percent and above during the 2010–2011 school year.

The 2011 Scholar Athletes are: Nathaniel Auzenbergs, Lauren Baldino, Jillian Barry, Matthew Franzoso, Michael Lanotte, Cory Sagerstrom, Michael Soldo, Michael Stearns, Ryan Trocki and Brahim Yatim. Since the organization was established in 2009, SAYFCO has presented 24 scholastic awards to its participants.

American Youth Football and Cheer has always stressed the importance of education and scholastic achievement to its members. All participants must have achieved a passing grade average for the school year ending prior to the beginning of the season. To verify academic fitness of all its participants, SAYFCO collects copies of year-end reports cards. The director of academics calculates each student’s average in accordance with guidelines provided by AYF/C.
