Shrewsbury Heads to MIAA Superbowl

The Shrewsbury Colonials are hoping to cinch the state finals.

SHREWSBURY, MA — Sixteen football teams will take the field Saturday searching for a state championship in the MIAA Super Bowls, including Shrewsbury High School (see game time and details below). Twelve were No. 1 seeds in their sectional, six are undefeated, and two — Xaverian and Mashpee — are seeking back-to-back titles.

Fans can park in P3 (By the movie theater). Tickets are $17 for adults and $14 for students/senior citizens. Children 5 years old and younger will receive free admission.

Here's a look at each game.

Division 1: Everett (9-2) vs. Xaverian (10-1) @ Manning Field, Lynn, 1 p.m.

These two met in Week 1 with Xaverian winning, 17-14. While Xaverian is going for its third straight title, Everett is coming off a 5-5 season and hasn't won a Super Bowl game since taking the Division 1A title in 2012. Xaverian relies on its defense and gives up just 7.6 points per game. Everett is led by UConn-bound quarterback Jordan McAfee.

Division 1A: King Philip (11-0) vs. Reading (8-3) @ Gillette Stadium, 8 p.m.

The last of six games in Foxboro pits Hockomock Kelley-Rex champion KP against a Reading team that finished second behind Lexington in the Middlesex Liberty. KP, which is playing in its first Super Bowl, is led by running back Shane Frommer. Reading is led by the Division's second-leading scorer in quarterback Corey DiLoreto and running back Nick DiNapoli.

Division 2: Duxbury (11-1) vs. Shrewsbury (9-3) @ Gillette Stadium, 6 p.m.

The team that lost 53-0 on Thanksgiving is the clear favorite in this one. Duxbury sat its starters on the holiday and the result wasn't pretty. But senior quarterback Bobby Maimaron will be back under center and the state's all-time leader in touchdown passes with 118 will have his full arsenal available. After losing back-to-back games, Shrewsbury has won six straight led by sophomore quarterback Drew Campanale.

Division 2A: Falmouth (12-0) vs. Marblehead (11-0) @ Gillette Stadium, 3:30 p.m.

One of only two Super Bowl games that pits undefeated teams. Marblehead has one of the best defenses in the state led by senior defensive end Bo Millett, allowing just 9.3 ppg. Falmouth scores 37.7 ppg and is led by quarterback Nate Couhig (18 TD passes). The Magicians are led on offense by quarterback Drew Gally (15 TD passes).

Division 3: Grafton (12-0) vs. Hanover (11-0) @ Gillette Stadium, 11 a.m.

The second bowl game to pit undefeated teams, Hanover boasts one of the best lines in the state. So it's no surprise that running back Brad Rogers leads Division 3 with 24 touchdowns and 146 points. Quarterback Wyatt Shisler has 13 touchdown passes for the Indians. Grafton is an experienced group, having won the 2015 Central title, and gives up just 9.0 ppg.

Divison 3A: East Bridgewater (10-2) vs. St. Mary’s (11-0) @ Gillette Stadium, 9 a.m.

This early one always seems to come down to which group of teens is ready to play football at 9 a.m. It's also a rematch, with EB beating the Spartans, 26-18, in last year's state semifinal. St. Mary's is led by Calvin Johnson, the leading scorer in the division with 29 touchdowns and 191 points. Quarterback Liam LeVangie leads East Bridgewater with 15 touchdown passes.

Division 4: Mashpee (11-1) vs. Wahconah (10-1) @ Gillette Stadium, 1:30 p.m.

Wahconah is the only Western Mass team playing Saturday and has one of the highest scoring teams in the region at 36.9 ppg. Wahconah has wins scoring 60, 57, 56, and 54 points. Mashpee is going for its second straight title after winning the Division 6 title last fall. Sophomore Devaun Ford leads Mashpee's offense with 23 touchdowns. Quarterback Nick Carpenter has 14 touchdown passes.

Division 4A: Maynard (12-0) vs. Millis-Hopedale (9-3) @ Worcester State, 12 p.m.

The Tigers never expected to be undefeated but Maynard has been led by a great defense, which has given up just 9.3 ppg. Millis has gone 2-3 away from home and has an offense that struggles at times, scoring just 22.5 ppg. Quarterback Bryce Latosec leads the Millis offense with 23 touchdown passes and Latosec to Brian Espanet (9 TD receptions) and Andrew Brooks (7) could be key in this one.
