Finally, we are working on a formal communication, but in short: We are having some serious behavioral issues with youth who are using the YA room and library during the after school hours, especially on Fridays and early release days. Please encourage your friends (or kids if you're a parent reading this) to follow the set policies and treat the facility, other library users, and library staff with respect. I have posted part of the teen room use policy below, and I encourage you to spread the word. Thank you!

Young Adult Room Policy

The Young Adult Room at the Shrewsbury Public Library is exclusively for middle and high school students from 2:30PM until closing each weekday, and all day on weekends and school vacation days. The materials in the room are primarily geared for youth in grades 7-12.

Tutoring is not allowed in the young adult room, even if the tutor is a teenager.

Covered beverages are welcome in most areas of the young adult room, but are restricted at the public computers stations. All food and candy must be kept in a backpack and not consumed in the teen room.

Teens are expected to respect the overall Library environment, and may not engage in activities or communications that disrupt other Library users or staff.

Respecting the teen space includes but is not limited to:

• NO swearing

• One person seated per chair, and no PDA.

• Placing drink cups/cans in trash when finished.

• Not sitting on the floor except in the designated seating areas

Those that violate these or other offenses as determined by library staff may be asked to leave the building immediately. All other Library policies apply to the Teen Room. The library reserves the right to limit the use of the library by teens who, in the judgment of the library staff, are infringing upon the rights of other library users by inappropriate behavior.
