Rafael Cazares and Thomas F. Tobin, Jr., both of Shrewsbury are one of 208 graduates of the state police academy in Braintree that were sworn in as a Massachusetts State Trooper earlier today. The ceremony took place at the DCU Center in Worcester.

Graduates have completed 21 weeks of academics, physical training, defensive tactics, firearms training and scenario training. The scenario training included 75 simulated incidents designed to reflect situations that troops may find on the job, including a rampaging shooter inside a building.

After the graduation, the new troopers will begin a three-month, break-in period next week during which each will be assigned to a field training officer on road patrols.

This is the first new class of state police recruits to join the ranks in more than five years. The department is currently down about 500 troopers, through normal attrition, since the prior class graduated.
