Boston Public School Bus Routes Covered Tuesday, Delays Expected

More than a dozen routes were not covered Monday morning.

It was an inconvenient start to the week for parents, students and officials of Boston Public Schools, as 13 of the district’s 120 scheduled bus routes did not run due to a lack of available union drivers.

In an update on Tuesday morning, BPS officials said they were able to fully cover Monday afternoon’s routes through the use of regular bus drivers, supervisors and backup providers, and as of 8:20 a.m. Tuesday morning, the drivers’ union dispatched supervisors to drive buses as a result of a continued shortage of union drivers willing to work. While all routes are set to run on Tuesday, some are expected to run late.

“The ongoing uncertainty is unacceptable to us and is unacceptable to our students and families, who count on having a reliable ride to school,” officials wrote in Tuesday’s update. “We know this is frustrating for families and schools. We join you in that frustration. We will continue to share information as it becomes available.”

On Tuesday, 32 schools were set to be open in the district, including two in-district charter schools, one Level 5 school, 15 Commonwealth Charter Schools and 14 special education programs, officials said. The first full day for all BPS students is Thursday, Sept. 4.
