Early Morning Accident Leaves One Driver Injured

Witnesses said taxi driver failed to obey traffic signal.

An early-morning collision on Saturday near the intersection of Berkeley Street and Columbus Avenue upended a vehicle and left the driver seriously injured, police reported.

The accident occurred around 4:42 a.m. on Saturday, after the driver of an ITAO taxi cab reportedly drove through a blinking red light on Berkeley Street, smashing into a green Ford Explorer traveling through the intersection on Columbus, police said.

The force of the collision upended the Explorer, sending it spinning onto its side, witnesses reportedly told police. The driver sustained injuries to his neck, back, and arms and was transported to Boston Medical Center. During an interview with police later on, the victim said he lost consciousness during the accident.

“All he remembers is a loud bang, and then he wakes up with the car on its side and Boston firefighters are tending to him,” police wrote in a report.

The driver of the taxi, who reportedly told police he “stopped a little” before colliding with the other car, which “came out of nowhere,” was cited for failing to stop at a red light and allowed to drive away from the scene.
