Five Things: Volunteers Needed for South End House Tour

The South End Historical Society is looking for house sitters for its 43rd annual tour.

Today is Thursday, September 22. Here are five things you need to know today:

1. It's the last day of summer and the forecast is calling for...clouds and rain? Showers likely this morning. Otherwise, humid with highs in the lower 70s.

2. The South End Historical Society is looking for house-sitting volunteers for its upcoming House Tour on October 15. The tour runs from 10 am to 5 pm. To sign up to volunteer call (617) 536-4445 or email admin@southendhistoricalsociety.org for more information.

3. Dozens of parents arrived at this week's School Committee Meeting to protest the proposed Boston Latin Academy move, wearing stickers emblazoned with "205", the school's current address in Roxbury. Superintendent Carol Johnson said she hoped to have a formal recommendation on the proposed move for the School Committee at its Oct. 12 meeting.

4. The City of Boston is looking for volunteers to plant 40,000 daffodil bulbs along public ways and medians this fall. They're also looking for suggestions on locations that could use some color come next spring. Click here to sign up or send comments.

5. The City Council unanimously agreed to petition state legislators to increase the high school dropout age from 16 to 18 during its regular meeting on Wednesday. Teachers and specialists testified at a hearing on the initiative on Tuesday, alongside Villa Victoria residents who said keeping kids in school could help combat violence. Read that story here.
