Going Bananas Opens For Business

South End market sells fresh produce and made-to-order sandwiches.

The South End's newest marketplace opened its doors this week with shelves stocked to the brim with fresh vegetables, bakery items, frozen foods and yes, bananas.

Going Bananas, which is owned by veteran shopkeeper Frank Scire, now has two locations at either end of the city. The South End shop is located at 682 Tremont Street, formerly home to Lambert's Marketplace.

Scire became familiar with the South End through regular delivery trips to Giacomo’s Restaurant. He's operated his North End store, which is a bit larger, for 20 years.

“I always thought that area would be a good place to open another Going Bananas,” Scire said in an with Patch in April.

This week, flyers advertising the store's opening were delivered to most South End mailboxes with a menu of sandwiches, wraps, salads and fresh fruit smoothies.

"You'll find everything you'd expect from a local grocer and everything you wouldn't," the flyer read. "Freshly prepared foods made with love, and most importantly a refreshingly warm welcome and thank you."

Going Bananas is open 7 days a week, 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Reach them at (617) 266-0009.
