Last of its kind in Boston's Harbor

Like a beacon to the past, a small structure sits near the shore of Lovells Island, one of Boston's historic harbor islands. This little red-brick oil house is all that remains of the lighthouse complex on Lovells that once guided ships in and out of the harbor.Both Lovells and Spectacle Island had what were called "range lights," built in 1902 as aids to navigation. The lighthouses weathered winter storms, hurricanes and two World Wars until succumbing to the forces of time. Now all that remains is the oil house and its future is uncertain.You can help the Friends of the Boston Harbors Island (FBHI) save and preserve this beacon into Boston's seafaring history. The FHBI has launched a new campaign that will ensure this historic structure will fascinate generations now and the future.Recently the Friends of the Boston Harbor Islands has been approved for a DCR (Massachusetts Dept of Conservation and Recreation) Partnership Matching Funds Program to not only save the brick house, but also to move it to safer and higher ground.
