Police Officer Injured in Sunday Morning Chase

Suspect in restraining order violation also had drugs, police say.

A Boston Police officer was transported to Boston Medical Center Sunday morning after chasing down a suspect who allegedly threatened his ex-girlfriend at her apartment while carrying several bags of crack cocaine.

According to a police report, Raymond Matthews of 784 Mass Ave threatened his ex-girlfriend over the phone on Saturday before showing up to her East Lenox Street apartment around 10:30am Sunday morning in violation of a restraining order.

The victim told police that she asked Matthews to cease phone contact but he continued to threaten her, stating, "I am going to wait for you tomorrow and stab you in the face and throw bleach in your eyes," the report states.

On Sunday, officers located a suspect later identified as Matthews exiting the victim's apartment. When detained, the suspect ran from police, cutting into a fenced area on East Lenox Street and into a playground where he was apprehended.

During the chase, Matthews allegedly dropped five plastic bags of crack cocaine that were located by police on Washington Street. Officers later found one plastic bag of marijuana and $167 in cash in Matthews' pockets, the report states.

Matthews was charged with violating a restraining order, possession of a class B substance with intent to distribute, possession of a class B substance near a playground and resisting arrest.

During the chase, an officer suffered a knee injury and "was unable to put his full body weight down comfortably," a supplemental report states. The officer was transported to Boston Medical Center for evaluation.
