Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Boston

The National Weather Service issued a warning to residents of Suffolk County at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Suffolk County, including Boston.

At 4:30 p.m., the NWS reported Doppler radar indicated a line of severe storms capable of producing quarter-size hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph.

These storms are moving east at 50 mph.

"Severe thunderstorms produce damaging winds and large hail, as well as deadly lightning and torrential rain," the warning reads. "Get to safe shelter now, inside a sturdy building or in a vehicle. Do not seek shelter under trees. If you can hear thunder you are close enough to be struck by lightning."

According to first-hand accounts on Twitter, a funnel cloud touched down 5 miles from Amherst, but nothing has been verified.

A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 5:30 p.m.
