Tremont Street Fire causes $50,000 in Damage

No serious injuries in two-alarm blaze, which broke out Monday evening.

A two-alarm fire broke out in the trash chute of a Tremont Street apartment building around 7 p.m. Monday night, causing an estimated $50,000 in damage.

Twelve residents of the 7-story high-rise at 474 Tremont Street had to be assisted out of the building, which is part of the Castle Square apartment complex and home to 48 units.

The blaze, which originated in the first floor trash compactor, was quickly extinguished thanks to a working sprinkler system, fire officials said. Residents were allowed back into the building Monday night.
