1,116 Test Positive For Coronavirus In Waltham

WALTHAM, MA — The number of people who have tested positive in the city for the new coronavirus rose to 1,116 as of Monday. There number of people who have reported to have died in the city because of the virus rose to 64, according to city data.

Waltham is among the hardest hit when it comes to the number of people who test positive for the coronavirus, according to the weekly accounts from the state. Out of 294 towns and 57 cities in the commonwealth, Waltham had the 13th highest number of positive cases in the state on May 20, the last day the state released those numbers. Boston was in the number 1 slot, followed by Worcester and Brockton. Cambridge dropped from number 17 to 19 last week. Newton sits at number 28.

For the second week in a row, eight Waltham residents died because of the virus. And as of Monday, 70 more people had tested positive from the previous Monday, according to city data.

Waltham does not publically release the ages or gender of the people who become infected with the virus that causes the illness known as COVID-19.

The city did say that since keeping track of the number of cases of the coronavirus, 308 people have recovered after testing positive for the virus.

By comparison, in neighboring Newton, 716 residents had tested positive for the virus as of May 21, the latest data available and 105 people had died. In Brookline there were 342 cases as of Tuesday and 38 deaths. In Belmont there were 214 reported to have tested positive for the virus and 117 deaths, at least half of those had confirmed with the town clerk's office that they were related to the virus as of May 22.

Across the commonwealth as of Monday, 93,271 people tested positive for the virus and 6,416 had died.
