Each month I write two columns for Waltham Patch, pertaining to local art and culture. "Lucci's List" offers book reviews with a focus on local authors and subject matter. "Literally Waltham" lists daily events for free or low cost for local neighbours to become inspired by. Arts are important to me in powerful ways. To me, the most striking affect of arts is the communication implied and invoked by the artist, connecting people to each other. Art is a community necessity.
This is why I am passionate about spreading the word about #ArtsMatterDay. Following is an important message from Elizabeth Moy, Founder and Director of Blueprint Projects. Please take a moment to read this worthwhile letter and view this questionnaire regarding Waltham politiciansβ beliefs about the arts.

Anyone whoβs taken their child to story time at the library, enjoyed a free outdoor event like Riverfest, the Watch City Steampunk Festival or Concerts on the Common, taken in a performance at the Charles River Museum, Hovey Players or Africano or even done some holiday shopping at Waltham Mills Open Studios or the Waltham Children's Business Fair, knows that arts, culture, and creativity brings people together and builds community. They make our neighborhoods prettier, livelier, and safer.
Thatβs why, with election season in full swing, itβs important that candidates talk about arts and cultural issues. Do they have a cultural development plan? Do they believe elected leaders must play a role in supporting arts and cultural activities? Do they have strategies for increasing investment in the arts? How will they integrate arts policies into government initiatives on education, public health and safety, and economic development?

Blueprint Projects, in partnership with MASSCreative developed a questionnaire to get a better sense of the candidates views on issues facing the creative community. In celebration of #ArtsMatter Day on October 25th they will be sharing their responses on their website.
