Hands On Poetry

Using STEM to Explore Poetry

Local publishing company Indie Woods sponsored the second installment of Hands On Poetry at the Waltham Public Library on Saturday afternoon. Hands On Poetry is a program geared to introducing young children to poetry by using STEM activities. Saturday’s event featured different coloured magnets and corresponding origami paper. Magnetic butterflies and a rainbow of Duplo blocks were accessible to contrast and compare, practice new vocabulary, and to experiment with gravity, sound, colour blending, and magnetic properties. Scientific questions were asked and expressed with poetic observations. Four year old Fiona of Waltham discovered that she could cause the butterflies to flutter over paper by using magnets. In the open-ended and instructor guided setting, poetry and science blended together like colours of a rainbow.

The third and final installment of Hands On Poetry for National Poetry Month will be held from 11:30-1 on Saturday the 28thin Classroom 4 at the Waltham Public Library. Musical instruments will be available to integrate sound into poems as rhythm, tempo, and volume are explored. Children of all ages and abilities are welcome to stop in or stay for the entire session.
