An art installation this weekend ended with a flash of fire this morning.

A silver hot air balloon was forced to land on the highway in this morning's busy commuter traffic. Andover Police and State Police responded to a 911 call reporting a hot air balloon crash.

The New Horizon hot air balloon was available for ticketed patrons at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln this past Saturday. Just after 8AM this morning, it crash landed during rush hour traffic in Andover. This was the third flight of the day, and landing safely proved difficult.

The on-ramp between Route 125 and Route 8 in Andover was blocked as the 100 foot tall balloon deflated. The pilot and passengers, including a WGBH film crew, survived with no major injuries.

Winds related to air temperatures may be a factor in the balloon's inability to land smoothly.
