Obituary: Archibald E. 'Archie' Carter, 89, of Waltham

Archie founded AE Carter Plumbing & Heating in Waltham in 1956, which his son continues to run to this day.

WALTHAM, MA – Mr. Archibald E. "Archie," Carter, of Waltham, died Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He was 89.

Archie was born in Waltham on December 11, 1927 to the late Archibald and Mary (Garnier) Carter. He was a graduate of Waltham Vocational High School and in 1946 joined the United States Army.
Raised in Wayland, Archie made his way to Waltham after his marriage to the late Mary D. (Orifice) Carter in 1948 where the newlywed couple started a family and became lifelong residents.

Archie opened AE Carter Plumbing & Heating, Inc. in Waltham in 1956, a business Archie took great pride in and one that his son Gary continues to manage to the present day.

A true outdoorsman, Archie found a lot of peace and happiness in fishing and boating. Green Harbor in Marshfield was one of his go-to destinations with family and friends. A dedicated gardener, Archie used his green thumb to grow an impressive home garden.

Loyal to his Boston sports teams, Archie was a big fan of the Celtics and enjoyed sitting back to watch the games.

Archie leaves his children, Michele A. Lorette and Gary E. Carter and his wife, Julie, all of Waltham; his grandchildren, Stacey Gaudet, Denise Lorette and Alex, Carolyn and Andrew Carter; eight great-grandchildren; his siblings, Frances Cahill, of Texas, and Rita Hubbard, of Salem; his longtime companion, Theresa Maloney and several nieces and nephews.

He was also the father-in-law of the late Wayne Lorette and a brother of the late Kathleen Hicks and Arthur Carter.

Family and friends will honor and remember Archie's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Sunday, February 26th from 3 to 7 p.m. and again on Monday morning when his funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
