Prep Work Begins To Replace Waltham's Woerd Ave Bridge

WALTHAM, MA — The bridge closures are getting more frequent ahead of a MassDOT bridge replacement project on the Woerd Avenue Bridge. Thursday and Friday the bridge will be closed as crews set up work for repairs from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.

This is still just the beginning. Preliminary work on the bridge was slated to begin just after Memorial Day, and the full bridge closure will go into effect in the fall and will continue through December 2020 as MassDOT crews work to replace the bridge.

This has been long in coming. Back in 2013 a request was made for repairs, but it wasn't until 2017 that there was a public hearing about it and it wasn't until last January the final design and process was approved.

When the new bridge is finished the existing bridge on Woerd Avenue over the Charles River will be replaced with a new infrastructure that includes sidewalks, railing, a deck and shoulder for bike usage.
