Springwell Awarded Transportation Grant to Support Older Adults

Waltham, MA, April 19, 2021—Springwell, a Waltham based nonprofit, is pleased to announce that they have been awarded a $90,000 grant from MassDevelopment, in partnership with the Metropolitan Area Planning Council through the Taxi, Livery and Transportation Partnerships Grant Program, an operational subsidy program aimed at expanding transportation service capacity through contracts with licensed taxi or livery businesses.

Springwell's mission to provide comprehensive services to seniors, individuals with disabilities and those who provide care, includes access to transportation for both social engagements and medical appointments. The lack of access to transportation is not a new need and has long been identified as a top issue for older adults. To further increase the need, COVID-19 precautions have left many seniors isolated and unable to engage in meaningful interactions in the community due to a lack of safe and accessible transportation.

With the financial support of this grant, Springwell has partnered with Alternative Transportation Systems to create a no cost transportation resource for individuals age 60+ who live in Springwell’s eight town service area (Belmont, Brookline, Needham, Newton, Waltham, Watertown, Wellesley, Weston) for both medical and non-medical purposes. When needed, Alternative Transportation can provide wheelchair vans with trained drivers who make door-to-door service possible for those who need transportation in a wheelchair.

“When we assess needs of older adults and individuals with disabilities in our communities, transportation is often the most sought service that helps them live independently in their homes. Current public transit options are limited in the Springwell service area and often are not accessible for people with limited mobility or a low income. Mass transit can also be challenging because walking conditions in some areas are difficult, making it harder to get around town and to and from bus stops. We are delighted that this grant will help us to fill what has been a significant gap in available services,” shares Trish Smith, Springwell CEO.

Alternative will register each person who seeks the service and create a profile that includes basic information about needs and demographics. Alternative Transportation will confirm each transport directly with the individual. Due to COVID19 risks, all passengers must wear a mask at all times.
