Waltham Resident Raises Money for Little League Defibrillators

"Safety on 1st" will provide Warrendale Little League and Waltham Youth Baseball with lifesaving equipment at fields.

WALTHAM, MA – Spurred by a recent incident in which a Waltham little leaguer was struck by a baseball in Charlestown and required resuscitation, one Warrendale resident took action. Liz McCarthy set up a GoFundMe campaign on April 30 to fund defibrillators for Warrendale Little League and Waltham Youth Baseball and provide life-saving training for interested parents and coaches.

And boy did she fundraise. "Safety on 1st: Little League AED" smashed through its $5,000 goal in just four days, raising $6,100 and closing the campaign.

According to McCarthy, defibrillators cost $1,000 each and CPR training is $200 for 20 people. McCarthy is currently searching to see if any other sports facilities in Waltham could benefit from a defibrillator and said the Logue family has already donated an extra one.

And the little leaguer that inspired McCarthy's crusade? One might say he's doing "epic," if his wardrobe is to be believed. McCarthy wrote on her page that she received a photo of him walking down the hospital hallway in a shirt bearing the word.

"There's lots of very bad news out there. This has renewed my faith in humanity," McCarthy wrote. "My heart is full and I'm grateful to all of you."
