Waltham Wins 2019 Bicycle Friendly Community 'Bronze' Award

WALTHAM, MA —This may not be news to Waltham's cycling community, but the city is getting noticed as a place for bicycle enthusiasts. So much so that it's begun to achieve national recognition.

Twice a year, the League of American Bicyclists honors communities, recognize municipalities with an award based on progress they make when it comes to being bicycle friendly.

Waltham was the only community in the commonwealth to be recognized as having improved this round. It received the list's "Bronze" award, joining more than 340 across the country with that same ranking, and just seven others in Massachusetts.

The league ranks communities as "Platinum," "Gold," "Silver," "Bronze" and "Honorable Mention."

In 2016 Waltham first made the list as a Bicycle Friendly Community, receiving an "Honorable Mention."

The Bicycle Friendly Community program has recognized 488 municipalities with awards, including at least one community in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The program is asks local bike advocates and people who bike to provide feedback throughout the process. Only 13 other communities in Massachusetts have been designated as bicycle friendly by the League of American Bicyclists.

As of Fall 2019, only Cambridge and Somerville were ranked "Gold." Boston, Nantucket, and Provincetown were ranked "Silver." Waltham joined seven other municipalities including, Arlington, Brookline, Falmouth, Lexington, Milton, Newton and Northhampton to be ranked "Bronze."

• Madison, WI
