Opening for an Adult Member on WYFS Youth Commission

Westborough Youth & Family Services is looking for an adult members to join the Youth Commssion.

The Westborough Youth Commission is seeking a Westborough resident, to serve as an adult voting member of the Youth Commission. Youth Commission members take a leadership role in Town government and provide community service towards the mission of Youth and Family Services, a department of the Town of Westborough. The mission of Youth and Family Services is to provide counseling and social services to Westborough residents and to promote behavioral health and wellness for the entire community.

The Youth Commission is a nine member volunteer board, composed of five adults and four high school students, appointed by the Board of Selectmen to advocate for the needs of youth, adults and families in Westborough. The Youth Commission meets monthly with the Director of Youth and Family Services to guide the direction of the department. The YFS Director and current Youth Commission members make recommendations to the Board of Selectman about candidates to be appointed to the Commission.

Responsibilities of Youth Commission Adult Voting Members:

  • Serve three-year term.
  • Attend monthly Youth Commission meetings, usually in the evening of the 2nd Monday.
  • Provide perspective and report about the status and needs of the community, particularly related to social, emotional and behavioral health.
  • Contribute input regarding development of policies and programming for YFS.
  • Volunteer time to help with YFS and Youth Commission programs and activities.
  • Serve as ambassador, representing the Youth Commission and YFS in the community.
  • Commit 2-3 hours of time per month to the Youth Commission.
  • Attend Town Meeting.

We are seeking candidates with a demonstrated interest in and commitment to at least one of the following: community service, advocacy, mental health, social and racial justice, political action, government. Residents who identify as multi-lingual, people of color, immigrants, LGBTQ and/or as members of historically marginalized communities are encouraged to apply, as the Youth Commission seeks to be representative and inclusive of all in Westborough.

  • Prior to applying, please explore the Youth & Family Services website to learn more about YFS and the Youth Commission.
  • Submit letter of interest by July 31st, to Cara Presley, Director of Youth and Family Services, via email: cpresley@town.westborough.ma.us.
  • Letter of interest must include:
    • Applicant’s full name, phone number and email address
    • Explanation of applicant’s interest in becoming a Youth Commission member and why the applicant would be a good fit for the Youth Commission
    • Resume is optional
  • YFS Director will review letters of interest, and the applicants will be contacted by phone by the Director or a current member of the Youth Commission for a brief conversation.
  • Candidates will attend a virtual meeting of the Youth Commission in August, to share about their interest and learn about the role of YC youth members.
  • The YFS Director and the current Youth Commission will submit recommendation to the Board of Selectmen, for a member to be appointed. All letters of interest will be shared with the Board of Selectmen.
