Sam Mayo Earns Eagle Scout

His project involved clearing the Bowman Conservation Area.

Westborough Boy Scout Troop 100 awarded the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout to Samuel Mayo on June 16. The ceremony was held at the Evangelical Congregational Church of Westborough, which is the chartering organization for Troop 100. The rank of Eagle, Scouting’s highest rank, is recognized throughout the world as an especially significant achievement.

Mayo crossed over to Boy Scouts in 2005 from Cub Scout Pack 4 of Westborough where he earned the Arrow of Light Award. As a Boy Scout, Mayo earned 36 merit badges. He has held important leadership positions for Troop 100 including Patrol Leader, Troop Guide and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. Sam has also been an active camper on monthly trips in the region as well as national adventure treks. These include Hemenway State Park, Maine High Adventure, Philmont Scout Reservation in Cimarron, New Mexico and the 2010 National Jamboree held at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia.

For his Eagle Project, Mayo restored two hundred yards of an overgrown and unrecognizable trail head in the Bowman Conservation Area in Westborough. To complete the project, Mayo and his crew cleared a 4-foot-wide access to the trail and spread 4 inches of wood chips on the cleared trail to retard the re-growth of plant life. The second phase Mayo's project was to repair the surface boards on a wooden walking bridge on the same trail. In all about 15 feet of boards were repaired or replaced, as necessary. Mayo's project required over 100 combined hours of planning and work from him and his crew.

In addition to his career in scouting, Mayo was a captain of the varsity swim team, a drum major in the WHS Ranger Marching Band, and the Secretary of the National Honor Society.

The son of Timothy Mayo and Lori Rounds of Westborough, Mayo is the brother of Peggy Mayo. After graduation from Westborough High School this year, Sam plans to major in biomedical engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and then get a doctorate in audiology.
