Uhlman's Ice Cream Opens, Celebrates 50 Years In Business

In case you missed it, your favorite place for ice cream has opened for the season.

WESTBOROUGH, MA — Long considered the unofficial start to spring around these parts, Uhlman's Ice Cream about seven years ago decided to make that date a little early because, like now, it was unseasonably warm.

Uhlman's Ice Cream again opened on March 1 for the season, not only excited to launch that new season, but 50 years in business.

" It's kinda like Memorial day being the unofficial start of summer," said Kelley Donley, store manager. "Once we open, warm weather is on the way. About seven years ago we had unseasonably warm weather and we decided to open on March 1. Before that we had always opened by St. Patrick’s Day. But once you open on the first, there is no going back."

And why do people go nuts? Well, because the ice cream is really good.

"We have been using the same recipe for over 50 years," said Donley. "My grandfather started Smithfield Ice Cream in Worcester in the '40s. Uhlman’s ice cream stand is the last standing store from the Smithfield day and the recipe hasn’t changed since. We use good, clean ingredients, a simple recipe, and small batches."

Donley expects the season to be "nutty," because that's how it's gone so far. Uhlman's now has an ice cream truck, too, and gets requests to do graduation parties, corporate events and even weddings.

"We have awesome customers," said Donley. "Many of them have become lifelong friends of mine, and I have watched people’s children grow up on the other side of the window. We are always trying new flavors and taking customer suggestions seriously and I think it shows with the turnout."
