Westborough Lions Host 1st Annual Rubber Duck Derby

Duck #2000, Adopted by Greg Conlan, Takes the Tape!

The Westborough Lions Club held its first annual Rubber Duck Derby on Saturday, April 10th, 2021 at 11 a.m. at the Mill Pond Spillway in Westborough. Due to the pandemic, it was an all-virtual event with online duck sales and the race broadcast on Facebook Live. The Club held the race to raise funds for a $1,000 scholarship for a graduating senior at Westborough High School this June. Three hundred and forty-one ducks were adopted by the public and raced down the Spillway to the finish line. It was a hotly contested race, as the lead changed several times with the winning duck, #2000, adopted by Greg Conlan, taking the lead in the last few seconds of the race. As the adopter of the first-place finisher, Greg netted 50 percent of the proceeds with a check for $1,310.70.

Westborough TV graciously filmed the race with a TV camera, a drone, and a Go-Pro camera outfitted onto a toy boat, which traced the route down the Spillway. The race can now be viewed on YouTube at: https://youtu.be/vuB6Hf5XF7E. Due to the enthusiasm of all involved and the success of the event, the Lions plan on hosting the Derby again next year! The Westborough Lions Club would like to thank everyone who supported the event!
