WESTBOROUGH, MA—A Westborough woman went a long way to run a long marathon.

Shannon Seile recently completed the 44th BMW Berlin, Germany, Marathon, which she registered for last fall. Last Thanksgiving she found out she had received a number to run, and learned that the particular marathon was a flat run compared to the Boston Marathon, which she ran twice, said the announcement.

She ran her best half marathon on Memorial Day weekend in Boston, using it as a starting point for her training.

A month before the race, she made reservations, along with her mom Beverly Gedutis of Hopkinton, who went over to cheer her on.

The Berlin Marathon is one of the six most significant marathons in the world, according to the press release. The others are Boston, Chicago, New York, London and Tokyo. There were 45,000 registered runners in Berlin, making it the largest Seile had ever run.

Raining slightly the morning of the race, Seile walked a mile to the starting point and had to wait two hours for the starting gun. With large crowds, including a couple that held up US flags and gave her one as she ran by, she said it was great experience.
