WILMINGTON, MA — She is described as short and youngish — between the ages of 17 and 30 — with long, dark hair and light skin. She has blue eyes and was wearing Victorian-era clothing. One shopper at the Wilmington Market Basket says a ghost matching the same description used to roam her house when she lived nearby on Clark Street.

Yes, a ghost. A Facebook group for Wilmington residents which usually features event announcements, posts about coyote sightings and discussions of local issues has been overrun in recent days with a debate on whether the Wilmington Market Basket is haunted.

Patch has reached out to Market Basket for comment and will update this story when we hear back from them. In the meantime, the thread on the closed Facebook group had more than 150 comments as of Tuesday morning. And while most of those comments are jokes — "What are you people smoking?" one person said — several others seem like earnest accounts of seeing the Market Basket ghost.

"I saw her and looked away to see if anyone else saw her and when I looked back she was gone," the Wilmington woman who started the discussion said in a follow-up post. The woman said the sighting happened too fast for her to snap a photo.

Another woman said she had seen a similar apparition, but the ghost she saw was "much younger." A woman who has worked at Market Basket for four years said she has never seen a ghost, but "I don’t want to LOL if you’re totally serious." Another employee said after working overnight shifts at the store he believes its "definitely haunted" but also conceded "it's probably just your imagination taking you to crazy places after working alone for 10 hours straight."
