Community Comes Together to Help Grant Bernie's Wish

Life-long Wilmington resident has terminal brain cancer and has one wish for his two nephews that his community is hoping to make come true.

WILMINGTON, MA - For the past year and a half, lifelong Wilmington resident Bernie McNally has been fighting a battle with terminal brain cancer. Last month he was told there are no more treatments available to treat his cancer.

During that fight he lost his brother. With that loss, he gained the role of father for his two nephews. Now as his fight continues, he has one wish – with all the loss his nephews have endured, his main concern is keeping them in their home.

A website has been set up to help grant Bernie's wish and it tells his story, while inviting residents to for a night of "funraising" on Friday, April 29 at 7 p.m. at Kitty's restaurant, located at 123 Main St. in North Reading. The event is in support of Bernie and his nephews Patrick and Seamus.

In December of 2014, Bernie was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. While Bernie was receiving treatment and fighting his disease his brother Patrick passed away suddenly, leaving sons Patrick and Seamus. Bernie has assumed the role of father for the boys. Patrick and Seamus are Bernie’s world! Sadly, in March 2016, Bernie was told that there are no more treatments available to treat his cancer. Since his diagnosis Bernie has had to leave his teaching position. Bernie’s primary concern throughout his ordeal has been his nephews and their well being. Bernie’s wish is that with all the loss his nephews have endured that they are able to remain in their home. Proceeds from this event will help make Bernie’s wish possible.

Bernie taught sixth grade social studies and English at the Timony School in Methuen prior to his diagnosis. For more than 20 years he taught CCD at St. Dorothy's, while during the same time period worked summers for the Wilmington Recreation Department.
