Selectmen's Notebook: Police Officers Promoted, Subway Gets Go-Ahead

Boy Scouts approved for upcoming fundraiser.

Town Manager Jeffrey Hull announced the promotion of two members of the Wilmington Police Department, at the April 8 Board of Selectmen's meeting.

Detective Davd Sugrue has been promoted to the rank of Sargeant and Sgt. Daniel Murray has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. Both promotions took effect April 8.

According to Hall, Murray was one of four candidates seeking the lieutenant position. He was the high scorer in the exam and the high scorer in the interview phase.

Sugrue, who has been with the department since 1985, was one of four candidates seeking the sargeant position. He tied for second top score on the exam and was the top scorer in the interview phase.

"I am pleased to be promoting officers of the caliber of David Sugrue and Daniel Murray and hope you will join me in wishing them success in the next phase of their law enforcement careers," said Hull.

In other business:

  • The board received word from the Office of Gov. Deval Patrick that the town will provisionally be receiving $1,137,697 in Ch. 90 highway funds for Fiscal Year 2014, under the governor's proposed Transportation Bond Bill, called "The Way Forward, a 21st Century Transportation Plan. However, this total is contingent upon the Legislature approving the bond bill, as well as the increased funding needed as part of the Fiscal 2014 Budget.
  • The board approved a common victualer license for Sanjjev Kumar to open a new Subway restaurant. The eatery will be located at 66U Concord St. It is not affiliated in any way with the Subway on Main Street.
  • The board was informed by the state's Alcohol Beverages Control Commission of a hearing on May 14 involving Colonial Park Liquors. According to Town Manager Jeffrey Hull, the hearing involves a charge that the business had obtained stock from an unlicensed source.
  • The board enied a request from resident Nick Santoro of Pouliot Place to install a stp sign at the intersection of Harold Avenue and Reed Street. However, acting on a recommendation from pub;ic safety officials, they did approve intalling left and right arrows at Reed Street and Harold Avenue.
  • The board denied a request from Rose Ryan and Heather Love of Body Infusion to hold a "Boot Camp" fitness program on either the town common or Rotary Park. Board members cited standing practice to allow town-owned property to only be used by non-profit organizations.
  • The board approved a request by Mark Fregeau, Scoutmaster for Troop 136, to use the former Swain School site and the adjacent municipal parking lot for a one-day Yard Sale Fundraiser on June 1.
  • The board approved a request by Mark Nelson to hold a neighborhood block party on Polk Street on Sunday, May 5, from 2 to 11 p.m.
