Wilmington Firefighters Once Again Shaving Heads to Fight Childhood Cancer

The Wilmington Firefighters Local 1370 have teamed up again with the Red Heat Tavern for this annual fundraising event set for June 11.

WILMINGTON, MA - Members of the Wilmington Fire Department will be shaving their heads again in June for charity, as the firefighter's union Local 1370 hosts an event for the St. Baldrick's Society.

St. Baldrick's is an organization that raises money for grants for childhood cancer research. Most of the money is raised by volunteers getting donations to have their head shaved. It's also a show of solidarity for the children going through cancer treatments.

Residents are encouraged to join in the event whether by getting a cut themselves, making a donation or taking part in the silent auction.

"We are very grateful for the opportunity to participate in such a meaningful event for a worthy cause, not only to raise money, but to show solidarity with the brave kids and families who battle cancer," says Wilmington Firefighter Russ Stering.

This is the third year Wilmington firefighters have teamed up with Red Heat Tavern for this event. Over the last two years they have raised more than $45,000. Once again they are doing it to support children's cancer research and honoring their friend Anthony N., a Wilmington 12-year-old who was diagnosed with Acute lymphoblastic leukemia in October 2012. Anthony is currently in remission.

"It is a great day, because it has raised over $50,000 over the past two years for childhood cancer research and the Boston Children's Hospital 6th Floor Resource Room, " Stering says. "The support from the community is moving. The generosity of the volunteers, barbers, Red Heat, Boston Bruins, CBS Radio, and of course the shaves, really creates a positive atmosphere and sense of camaraderie."

This year's event will be held on Saturday, June 11 from 1-5 p.m. at Red Heat Tavern located at 300 Lowell St. in Wilmington.

This year's event will include a representative from the Bone Marrow Registry there, as well as volunteer barbers (Darlene Mauriello, Lauren Elliot, Scott Pelletier, and Lisa Boule of The Hair Cuttery), and photographer Lyn Denver. There will be silent auction items which include autographed sports memorabilia, concert tickets, and signed sticks donated by the Boston Bruins.
