Message from Wilmington Animal Control Officer: pick up the poop and leash your dog.

WILMINGTON - In an open letter to Wilmington residents, Wilmington Animal Control Officer Chris Sullivan has a message to dog owners: pick up the poop and leash your dogs.

Sullivan has received numerous complaints that dog owners/walkers are not picking up after their dogs while on walks. Not only is this irresponsible and inconsiderate, but it is against the law. Section 27.6 of the Town Bylaw states "it is the duty of each person who owns, possesses or controls a dog to remove and dispose of any feces left by their dog".

Anyone who violates this Bylaw is subject to a $50 fine for FIRST offense, followed by a $100 fine for second offense, followed by a $300 fine for each violation there after.

So please, be a responsible dog owner and pick up after your dog(s).

2. In the past two days there have been two dogs struck by motor vehicles. One dog luckily was okay and only had to be treated with pain medications, but the second dog unfortunately did not make it. I know I don't remind anyone that there is a leash law in town. Please take extra care and make sure your dog is leashed or on a runner.

3. For anyone using the dog park, please be responsible and pick up after your dog AND BRING IT AND ALL YOUR TRASH home with you.

4. The Annual Wilmington Rabies Clinic is this Saturday, April 1st, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Public Buildings garage located at 30 Church St.

As always, please feel free to call me at the station or email me with any comments, question or concerns.
