Wilmington Selectmen Approve Three-Year Police Contract

Contract calls for 2 percent raises each year, increases in detail pay, and training in the use of Narcan and tasers.

WILMINGTON, MA -- The Board of Selectmen has approved a three-year collective bargaining agreement dating back to July 2016 between the Town of Wilmington and the New England Police Benevolent Association, Local 1, Patrolmen’s Union, the Wilmington Apple reports.

The contract, which runs from July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2019, includes:

  • Two percentcost of living increase in each fiscal year
  • A six-step wage scale is shifted up, with the existing step one is eliminated, current step two becomes step one and a step is added on at the other end to become the new step six
  • Night differentials are increasing from $1.25 an hour to $1.50 an hour (4 p.m.-midnight) and $1.75 an hour (midnight-8 .pm.).
  • Detail rates are increasing from $42 an hour to $44 an hour effective 30 days after contract is executed. The detail rate will go up to $46 an hour on on Jan. 1, 2018 and $48 on Jan. 1, 2019.
  • Longevity increases have been readjusted for new hires. They would not be entitled to a longevity increase until working 10 years for the town (currently at five years) and would be capped overall at 12 percent (currently at 15 percent).
  • Town can now use assessment centers, in addition to the standardize test, for the purpose of promotion.
  • The police will engage in the use of Narcan and tasers as appropriate and will go through the necessary training for both.
