Wilmington Town Meeting Tackles Tasers, Marijuana Moratorium

The high school gym will be named the Lawrence H. Cushing Sr. Gymnasium, a physical education teacher and athletic director.

WILMINGTON, MA -- Town Meeting has approved a $108.9 budget for fiscal year 2018, up 4.7 percent from last year's $104 million budget, The Sun reports.

Voters on Saturday approved a $38.8 million budget for the town school district, and $4.18 million assessment for the Shawsheen Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School District.

* Article 49, which will enforce a temporary moratorium on recreational marijuana establishments until June 30, 2018.

* Residents agreed to spend $32,500 for Tasers for the Police Department.

* $32,500 for Tasers for the Police Department

* $67,500 for improvements to the Middle School Technology Education Lab.

* $50,000 for the second of three phases to implement the VoIP Telephone System throughout the schools.

* $175,000 to replace 14,000 square feet of roofing at North Intermediate School.

* $125,000 to replace the chairlift at the Shawsheen Elementary School.

* The Police Department will get $270,000 for five replacement police cruisers and $50,000 for a replacement animal control vehicle.

* The Fire Department will replace an ambulance with $320,000. The DPW will see purchase several vehicles, including but not limited to, $137,000 for a heavy-duty dump truck and sander, $38,500 for a pickup truck with plow and $68,500 for a heavy-duty tree chipper.

* Article 45 will establish a Research and Development Use zone as its own classification.

* Voters also approved Article 44 to name the high school gym the Lawrence H. Cushing Sr. Gymnasium, a physical education teacher and athletic director.

* Article 31 was approved to appropriate $275,000 to design, construct and reconstruct water mains on Middlesex Avenue.

* Article 32 was approved to appropriate $1.05 million to design, construct and reconstruct water mains on Ballardvale Street.

* Article 50 was approved to accept Cheyenne Drive as a public way.
