MA Snow Storm: Woburn Seniors Seek Assistance

As old man winter rears his ugly head, Woburn's seniors ask for your help.

WOBURN, MA—With winter weather afoot in Woburn this weekend, many Woburn seniors are stuck wondering how they will remove snow from their property.

With that in mind, SCI Social Capital Inc. is seeking out snow shovelers to help Woburn’s seniors and the differently abled. SCI aims to connect those who can help with members of the community that need helping hands, according to SCI’s website. Woburn’s youth are encouraged to sign up and lend a helping hand.

The snow shoveling program has formed a relationship with the Woburn Senior Center, and the Daily Times Chronicle reported in 2015 that an un-shoveled driveway could be life-threatening to a senior.

Many seniors rely on meals being delivered and senior public transportation for rides to and from doctors appointments and the grocery store. If their driveways and walkways aren’t shoveled out they don’t have access to receive these meals or use the transportation. One Woburn senior mentioned that she couldn’t receive her heating oil delivery because she hadn’t been shoveled out. That’s why the situation became so urgent when we received unprecedented snow accumulations this winter in such a short amount of time. SCI recognized the immediate need in the community and sprung into action quickly mobilizing the Youth in Woburn through avenues such as Youth Councils, Church Groups and high school sports teams.

Seniors needing assistance should contact the Woburn Senior Center at 781-937-7899, and community members who are able to volunteer should contact darrick@socialcapitalinc.org.
