Sylvan Learning is a supplemental learning center focused on building academic confidence, igniting intellectual curiosity and inspiring a love for learning in children around the world. For 40 years, Sylvan has helped millions of students and families achieve new levels of academic success. These days, Sylvan is offering virtual classes online during the new coronavirus outbreak to help children build confidence, boost study skills and help deliver better grades, all from the comfort of their own homes.

Rosina LeBlanc, a Sylvan franchisee of the Woburn, Danvers and Swampscott communities, has been with the company for 13 years. “I believe in Sylvan,” she says. “I believe that we can help every child succeed.”

Patch caught up with Rosina to learn more about the success of Sylvan Learning — which happens to be the largest private employer of certified K-12 teachers in the world — and how it serves local Massachusetts communities.

Patch: How long have you been doing business in town or how long has the organization you represent been around in the community?

LeBlanc: Sylvan has been around for 40 years.

Patch: What attracted you to the line of work you're in, or how did you get started?

LeBlanc: I started working for the corporate office in 2007 as a center director. It was easy for me to transition into a multi-center franchisee in 2014. It was easy because I believe in Sylvan, I believe that we can help every child succeed. I believe it because I have witnessed it time after time.

Patch: If you had to sum up your business mission to a stranger in five words, what would those words be?

LeBlanc: Assess, Personalized Plan, Technology, Results.

Patch: What's the biggest challenge or most difficult moment you've faced in your job.

LeBlanc: The biggest challenge is now. It’s the problem myself and the world is trying to navigate through — the new coronavirus. Schools are closed for the rest of the school year. Students now need us more than ever. I want to let families know we are here for them. We have free resources on our website for families. Sylvan also hosts free mini academic camps. We are offering free virtual assessments and discounted tuition. We are here to help, and I want to help as many children as I possibly can.

Sylvan's approach is based on 40 years of proven teaching experience and leading-edge technology.

Patch: What's the most satisfying part of your job?

LeBlanc: The most satisfying part of my job is each student’s “aha” moment. It’s when a student masters a skill, completes an assignment, improves on their report card or aces their SAT/ACT. Their confidence rises, and you can see that they are turning into independent learners. These are my favorite moments.

Patch: How would you say your business or organization distinguishes itself from others?

LeBlanc: Sylvan Learning is the best tutoring company in the world! (Yes, we are international.) We have an entire page on how we compare to other companies — you can be the judge.

Patch: What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given when it comes to success?

LeBlanc: Honesty is the best policy. I honestly believe in what I do. I honestly believe that our programs can help every child.

Patch: Are there any new projects or endeavors you're working on that you're extra excited about?

LeBlanc: The virtual online tutoring is amazing! We start with a live computer adaptive assessment. Next we review the results and set up a plan. Students receive an invite the day before their class; and once they log in, they start their live session with our local, certified and amazing teachers! Parents will have monthly progress meetings with a director to review their child’s progress.
