WOBURN, MA — Woburn firefighters put out an early morning accidental fire in an Inwood Drive apartment Tuesday, Fire Chief Donald Kenton said.

The department responded around 4:10 a.m. to 5000 Inwood Drive, where a fire started in the 3rd floor of the garden-style apartments.

Two tenants of the apartment heard the smoke detector going off.

"When they came out into the living room, they saw fire and smoke," Kenton said. "So they fled the apartment."

The sprinkler system activated and when firefighters arrived they enter the building and put out the fire, Kenton said. The building was turned back over to the building manager around 7 a.m., although the department required them to set a fire watch on all floors.

Fire prevention checked in around 10 a.m. to follow-up, Kenton said.

No firefighters were hurt, the chief said. The two residents were treated by paramedics but refused to go to the hospital.

Kenton estimated the damage in the 3rd-floor apartment and the two beneath it at $100,000-150,000. Residents of all three units were displaced and are staying with family, the chief said.

"The apartments to the left and right were fine," Kenton said. "The guys did a fantastic job in keeping it to a single alarm fire."

Winchester and Reading firefighters provided mutual aid at the scene while other nearby communities provided station coverage.
