Woburn - Monday, November 11 was the kick off event for the Woburn Volunteers for Seniors season. It was the first of two leaf raking events organized by SCI Woburn, (Social Capital Inc.) a local nonprofit organization. There was a great turnout and a lot of good work was done. Looking ahead, SCI is seeking volunteers willing to be matched to a senior for ongoing snow shoveling over the winter which is the second arm of the program.

On Monday over 50 people showed up to volunteer for local seniors. Thanks to this hard working group of volunteers, thirteen yards were raked, hundreds of leaf bags were filled and over 208 hours of service were provided to Woburn seniors! Spreading Sunshine, a Woburn Memorial High School service club sent 20 volunteers, St. Vincent de Paul’s Youth Group had a dozen volunteers and worked fast and efficiently. Many moms were there with their kids and entire families showed up to serve together for the morning. Volunteers ranged in age from 4-64 on a beautiful day to be outside spreading a little kindness around the community.

Community businesses joined in the effort. Starbucks on Washington Street in Woburn donated hot coffee for all the volunteers, and Ace Hardware on Winn Street donated all the leaf bags. SCI has a variety of events throughout the year that local businesses can be involved with.

As snow flurries fell from the sky yesterday we were all reminded that winter and snow are just around the corner. Any day now could be our first big snow, which is why SCI is urgently recruiting volunteers to shovel snow for seniors in need. If interested you will be matched with a senior with a goal of clearing safety issues, such as exhaust vents and walkways, in a timely manner following a large snowfall. There is a big need for volunteers as Woburn has a large population of senior citizens. We do have a waiting list and give priority to seniors with health or mobility issues. If you are interested in being of service please reach out.

“If we can get help with raking and snow shoevling, we might just be able to stay in our home.” said one local senior served by Woburn Volunteers for Seniors.
